Statement of Dr Kidong Park at the Workshop on country self -assessment of the IHR (2005) implementation progress in 2017

Dr Kidong Park - WHO Representative in Viet Nam

10 September 2017

I would like to extend WHO's congratulations to the people of Viet Nam and the Government of Viet Nam on their excellent progress in achieving the International Health Regulation core capacities. Viet Nam has reached 99% of the average value of the 13 core capacity indicators in 2016, while the average value of these capacity indicators in the WHO Western Pacific Region remains at 79%.

I would also like to reiterate that Viet Nam is the first county in the Region, which went through the Joint External Evaluation of the International Health Regulation core capacities. WHO secretariat and the Joint External Evaluation appreciated Viet Nam’s excellent achievements and its openness to the world.

However, we cannot simply celebrate our achievements and loosen our grip. Emerging infectious diseases and other forms of public health emergencies are constantly evolving their characteristics and threatening us. Without continuous investment no country in the world is permanently immune to these risks. As Viet Nam enjoys its economic development and increased connectivity to the world, this country will also be exposed to new types of public health emergencies.

Having said that, I believe this workshop, the 5th annual IHR review workshop, is very timely. During the last 2 days we have re-examined the strengths and weaknesses of Viet Nam's health system in addressing risks from emerging infectious diseases and other forms of public health emergencies. We have identified priorities and key immediate action points to further strengthen IHR core capacities and fill the gaps we’ve identified.

Again, I would like to congratulate all participants for your active participation and accomplishments. Together with our partners the WHO is always ready to support you in this process. Your achievements will also contribute to a healthier and safer world.

Thank you

Dr Kidong Park
