Biography

Miriam Cano MD is an experienced ophthalmologist who likes working in Prevention of Blindness. She does General Ophthalmology and Medical Retina. She was Chief of the Eye Department at the Social Security Hospital of Paraguay. As she was trained in Community Eye Health, she was appointed as the Eye Health Director of the Ministry of Health and elected to lead the National VISION2020 Committee. Now, she is retired from public duty but keeps teaching medical students at the Catholic University of Asunción and working in her office. Besides, she was president of the Paraguayan Society of Ophthalmology and current country representative at the Pan-American Association of Ophthalmology Board of Directors. Miriam represented her country at the ICO for many years.

She graduated as an MD, first of her class, at the National University of Asuncion Paraguay (1980) and (1985–1987) learning retina, diagnostic ultrasound and electrophysiology, at UCSD, USC-LA and the University of Chicago. She got her MSc in CEH at the LSHTM University of London, UK (2006), and an MBA at the Catholic University of Asuncion, Paraguay (2010).

Miriam is married and has two children.
