WHO Cox’s Bazar: Rohingya emergency crisis - Situation Report: August 2024

Situation report

Overview

Overall Situation

August was marked by significant socio-political changes in Bangladesh. An interim government led by Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus ministry was formed on 8 August 2024 in Bangladesh, following the resignation of Prime Minister on 5 August 2024 amid nationwide student and public protests against the government.

Coordination and Leadership

In August, the WHO-led Health Sector held its monthly Health Sector Coordination meetings at various levels in Cox’s Bazar, including one at the district level and 33 in the camps. However, meetings at the Upazila level were postponed due to political unrest. During these meetings, health partners received updates on the overall situation, epidemiology, and disease surveillance, including dengue and cholera. Other topics covered included routine Expanded Programme on Immunization (EPI) and Acute Flaccid Paralysis (AFP) & Vaccine-Preventable Diseases (VPD) surveillance, sexual and reproductive health, community health, emergency preparedness and response, and mental health activities and updates.
