Strengthening monitoring system makes Community-based health facilities more accountable

Joint monitoring activities by Government and development partners involving NGO representatives can improve performance in health service delivery. The conclusion came out following a consultative meeting held in Dhaka on Independent Evaluation of Community-Based Health Care Services with participation from Non-Government Organizations (NGOs), WHO technical unit and Government officials from Directorate General of Health Services.

The event was part of a broader independent evaluation of Community-Based Health Care Services for which HERA, an international consulting firm, was commissioned by World Health Organization (WHO) Bangladesh. The participants from 20 NGOs also emphasized the need for developing a national comprehensive guideline on strengthening the Community-Based Health Care Services. In addition, NGOs have committed to contribute to improving the referral mechanism by providing vehicle support logistics as well as technical support.

Participants recommended intensive orientation programs with the support of NGOs for Community Groups (CG) and Community Support Groups (CSG) for strengthening their capacity in performing their roles: raising awareness, promoting education for health, local advocacy on health issues, service delivery monitoring.

WHO has been providing technical assistance to community-based health care services and is committed to continue the support for achieving better quality services.
