The Director-General’s Awards for Global Health
WHO Director-General Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus shares a laugh with a recipient of a Global Health Leaders Awards at the Seventy-first World Health Assembly in May 2018.
About the Director-General’s Awards for Global Health
In the last few decades, global health actors have stepped up leadership, commitment and innovation in an unprecedented manner. The worldwide mobilization has been further boosted in the years of coordinated response to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Back in 2019, the WHO Director-General gave Global Health Leaders Awards to a number of individuals who have showed outstanding commitment to public health goals. The Awards are now presented on an annual basis to selected individuals or groups of individuals who have demonstrated exceptional leadership to achieve tangible health impacts.
Each award recipient receives, during the WHO’s most important governing body meeting of the year, the World Health Assembly, a personalized engraved plaque and a certificate signed by the Director-General. There is no financial prize associated with this distinction. Recipients will be invited to attend the event in person.
