WHO/Europe, in collaboration with the European Observatory on Health Systems and Policies and the WHO Country Office in Serbia, will launch the new edition of the Health Systems in Action (HSiA) insights series at a hybrid event in Belgrade, Serbia on 28 January.
The event will be hosted at the Ministry of Health of Serbia and opened by WHO Regional Director for Europe Dr Hans Henri P. Kluge and Serbia’s Minister of Health Dr Zlatibor Lončar.
The new insights provide core information and data on the health systems of 15 non-European Union (EU) countries in the WHO European Region and how they are evolving over time. The countries covered are, Armenia, Belarus, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Georgia, Israel, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Montenegro, North Macedonia, Serbia, Switzerland, Tajikistan, Ukraine, United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, and Uzbekistan.
This launch highlights this series for non-EU countries and the importance of assessing health system performance across the entire Region in all its diversity and complexity.
About the HSiA insights series
The HSiA insights series provides key information and data on countries’ health systems in a quick, clear and easy-to-digest format. Specifically, the HSiA insights offer:
- a succinct and accessible overview of health systems;
- context on the countries’ health systems within the framework of WHO’s European Programme of Work (EPW);
- key information on health system concerns, progress and challenges; and
- a baseline to monitor health system developments over time.
The series draws on knowledge from WHO country offices, the Division of Country Health Policies and Systems (CPS), the WHO Barcelona Office for Health Systems Financing, other WHO/Europe technical programmes, and the country monitoring of the European Observatory on Health Systems and Policies. Updated every 2 years, the insights follow a common template to ensure consistency across countries.
This event will highlight the value of routine updating in tracking health system progress, in line with the objectives of the EPW. Serbia was selected to host the launch as a representative of the Western Balkans, showcasing its regional leadership in health system improvement and its role in advancing the EU Growth Plan for the Western Balkans.
This launch marks a critical step in supporting non-EU Member States with actionable insights and will foster collaboration to strengthen health systems across the Region. The event will be streamed live, and connection details will be made available on this page in due course.
