Le 31 décembre 2019, l’Organisation mondiale de la Santé (OMS) a été informée qu’un groupe de cas de pneumonie dont la cause était inconnue avait été détecté à Wuhan, dans la province de Hubei, en Chine. Le 7 janvier 2020, les autorités chinoises ont identifié un virus, le SARS-CoV-2, comme agent étiologique de cette maladie à laquelle l’OMS a donné le nom de maladie à coronavirus 2019 (COVID-19) le 11 février 2020. Dans le cadre de la riposte de l’OMS à cette flambée épidémique, un schéma directeur en matière de recherche-développement a été établi pour accélérer la mise au point de diagnostics, de vaccins et de traitements pour ce nouveau coronavirus.
Sous la coordination de l’OMS, un groupe d’experts venant d’horizons divers s’attèle à mettre au point des vaccins contre la COVID-19.
Ce groupe lance un appel pour que chacun respecte les recommandations visant à prévenir la transmission du virus responsable de la COVID-19 et à protéger la santé des personnes. Il remercie également toutes celles et tous ceux qui accordent leur confiance au monde scientifique.
Déclaration
Scientifiques, médecins, bailleurs de fonds et fabricants, nous nous sommes unis dans le cadre d’une collaboration internationale coordonnée par l’Organisation mondiale de la Santé (OMS) dans le but d’accélérer la mise à disposition d’un vaccin contre la COVID-19. Bien qu’il faille du temps pour mettre au point un vaccin destiné à un usage général, celui-ci pourrait, à terme, être essentiel pour maîtriser cette pandémie planétaire. En attendant, nous saluons l’application de mesures d’intervention auprès des populations qui permettent de ralentir la propagation du virus et de protéger les personnes, y compris les populations vulnérables, et nous nous engageons à tirer parti du temps que fait gagner l’adoption de telles mesures généralisées pour mettre au point un vaccin dans les plus brefs délais. Nous ne relâcherons pas nos efforts en vue de renforcer la collaboration, la coopération et la mise en commun des informations qui sont déjà une réalité sans précédent dans le monde entier. Nous sommes convaincus que ces efforts contribueront à parer aux carences et aux doubles emplois et nous œuvrerons avec opiniâtreté à la mise à disposition rapide d’un ou de plusieurs vaccins efficaces et sans danger pour tous.
