The World Health Organization (WHO)

The World Health Organization (WHO) was established on 7 April 1948 as the directing and coordinating authority in global public health within the United Nations system. Working at three levels in the Organization (global, regional and country), more than 7000 WHO staff worldwide collaborate with the governments of 194 Member States and other partners to achieve the WHO founding vision of the attainment of the highest possible level of health by all people.

The Western Pacific Region

The WHO Western Pacific Region is home to more than one quarter of the world’s population, stretching over more than one third of the distance around the globe. In all, more than 600 WHO staff work in 15 country offices and the Regional Office in Manila, Philippines, to support Member States in achieving better health outcomes for the Region’s nearly 1.9 billion people in 37 countries and areas.

WHO presence in Mongolia

The WHO Representative’s Office in Mongolia is the official representation of the World Health Organization in the country. The role of the WHO Representative’s Office is to respond to requests from the host country to support policy-making for sustainable health development, taking a holistic health-system approach. This includes providing guidance, building up local relationships to implement technical cooperation, and ensuring that public health measures are coordinated and in place during disease outbreaks and public health emergencies. WHO Representative’s Office works closely with Ministry of Health and Sports of Mongolia and other local and international partners to promote the global and regional health goals to prevent and protect humankind from devastating ill health in an era of globalization with increasing interdependencies between countries.

Mongolia joined WHO on 18 April 1962. It was initially under the South-East Asia Region until its transfer to the Western Pacific Region in July 1995. The history of World Health Organization in Mongolia is a story of over 40 years of collaboration.

Over the past four decades, WHO has made significant contributions to the implementation of Mongolian national health policies and efforts to improve the health and social well-being of the people of Mongolia. WHO has additionally played a major role with the Ministry of Health in health system development and the reform process through various technical inputs. WHO's contribution has included a focus on reducing maternal and child deaths and diseases, restructuring and financing of healthcare services, health insurance, human resource development, strengthening health information systems and the establishment of multi-sectoral integrated approaches for health promotion.
