A film from Nepal has been nominated in the 'Animation' category on Menstrual Hygiene at the inaugural Health for All Film Festival launched by the World Health Organisation (WHO). The film (link here) is a co-creation of the National Health Education Information and Communication Centre (NHEICC) of the Ministry of Health and Population of Nepal and Makura Creations and has been supported by the GIZ.
"The volume, quality and diversity of entries for the Health for All film festival far surpassed our expectations," said Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, WHO Director-General. He was referring to the staggering 1265 submissions received by the WHO from 119 countries. This film festival is scheduled for May 2020 in Geneva, Switzerland, and will coincide with WHO's annual World Health Assembly.
There is another Nepal connection among the entries in the video reports category all the way from Brazil. This entry profiles the tireless efforts of Dr. Sanduk Ruit of Nepal to make eye care accessible to all. The Tilganga Institute for Ophthalmology (TIO) founded by Dr. Ruit was also recognised as WHO's Collaborating Centre for Ophthalmology in Nepal in 2019 and is the first Nepali health institution to be accorded this status.
"Story-telling brings the world together, and films are an effective medium. We are rooting for the Nepal connected entries at our film festival. NHEICC and TIO are both longstanding entities in the pursuit of health for all in Nepal. It is fantastic that their work can be highlighted through the film festival" said Dr Jos Vandelaer, Representative of WHO for Nepal.
The film festival jury will now nominate a winner in each category for a Grand Prix, corresponding with a grant of US$ 10,000. The WHO Director-General will make the final decision on awards, based on the advice of the jury.
