21 April 2022 | Kathmandu, Nepal – The Director-General of World Health Organization (WHO), Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, and WHO South-East Asia Regional Director, Dr Poonam Khetrapal Singh, today arrived in Kathmandu on a two-day visit.
The WHO leaders, accompanied by WHO Representative to Nepal, Dr Rajesh Sambhajirao Pandav, and Dr Shambu Acharya, Director of Department of Country Strategy and Support, met Minister for Health and Population Birodh Khatiwada, Minister for Foreign Affairs Narayan Khadka, and Rt. Honorable Chairperson of the National Assembly Ganesh Prasad Timilsina, on day one of the visit.

In their meeting with Health Minister, Dr Tedros commended the Ministry of Health and Population's efforts in ensuring that Nepal is on track to achieve WHO's global target of vaccinating 70% of the total population by mid-2022, and reiterated WHO's commitment to support Nepal with strengthening public health emergency preparedness and response, among other flagship priority areas.
Dr Tedros lauded Nepal's overall COVID-19 response and efforts to towards achieving Universal Health Coverage.
Dr Poonam Khetrapal Singh congratulated Nepal for introducing Typhoid Conjugate Vaccine and including it in the routine immunisation program, the first country in the Region to do so.
She said the country’s efforts for strengthening essential health services, as per a resolution adopted by Member countries of the Region in 2020, was noteworthy.
She also said Nepal’s commitment to address noncommunicable diseases was evident from the endorsement of the Multisectoral Action Plan and the launch of SAFER Initiative in the country.
Dr Singh highlighted the need to accelerate efforts on a range of issues including disease elimination, reduction of maternal, neonatal, and under-five mortality, and advancing universal health coverage.

The delegation then paid courtesy calls on Honorable Minister for Foreign Affairs, Narayan Khadka, and Rt. Honorable Chairperson of the National Assembly, Ganesh Prasad Timilsina.
Chairperson Timilsina felicitated Dr Tedros and Dr Singh and expressed his gratitude to WHO for its continued support to Nepal and for the fruitful collaboration demonstrated during the series of engagement programs with parliamentarians in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Dr Tedros commended the whole of society approach adopted by Nepal in its COVID-19 response and applauded its recognition of health as a basic human right in the constitution.
The WHO delegation led by the Director-General will next call upon Rt. Honorable President, Bidya Devi Bhandari, and Rt. Honorable Prime Minister, Sher Bahadur Deuba, on 22 April. Following which they'll visit a local school to observe the ongoing typhoid conjugate vaccination campaign and tour a health facility.

स्वास्थ्य मन्त्रीसँगको भेटमा महानिर्देशकले विश्व स्वास्थ्य संगठनको विश्वव्यापी लक्ष्यअनुसार सन् २०२२ को मध्यसम्ममा कूल लक्षित जनसंख्याको ७० प्रतिशतलाई खोप लगाउने उद्धेश्य हासिल गर्न नेपालले गरेको प्रयासको प्रशंसा गर्नुभयो र जनस्वास्थ्य आपत्कालीन तयारीलाई सुदृढ तुल्याउने सहितका अन्य प्राथमिकताका क्षेत्रहरुमा नेपाललाई सहयोग गर्ने विश्व स्वास्थ्य संगठनको प्रतिबद्धता दोहो¥याउनुभयो ।
डा टेड्रोसले नेपालको समग्र कोभिड–१९ महामारी प्रतिकार्य र स्वास्थ्यमा विश्वव्यापी पहुँच हासिलका लागि गरिएका प्रयासहरुको प्रशंसा गर्नुभयो ।
यसैगरी, डा पूनम खेत्रपाल सिंहले टाइफाइड कन्जुगेट खोपलाई नियमित खोप कार्यक्रममा समावेश गर्ने यस क्षेत्रको पहिलो देश भएकोमा नेपाललाई बधाई ज्ञापन गर्नुभयो ।
सन् २०२० मा यस क्षेत्रका सदस्य राष्ट्रहरुले अवलम्बन गरेको संकल्प अनुरुप अत्यावश्यक स्वास्थ्य सेवाको सुदृढीकरणमा नेपालले गरेको प्रयास उल्लेखनीय भएको उहाँले बताउनुभयो ।
बहुक्षेत्रीय कार्ययोजनाको अनुमोदन र सेफर इनिसियटिभको शुभारम्भ गरेबाटै नसर्ने रोगको सम्बोधनमा नेपालको प्रतिबद्धता स्पष्ट भएको क्षेत्रीय निर्देशकले बताउनुभयो ।
डा सिंहले रोग उन्मुलन, मातृ, नवजात शिशु र पाँच वर्ष मुनिका बालबालिकामा हुने मृत्युदर घटाउने र स्वास्थ्यमा सर्वव्यापी पहुँच बढाउने लगायतका मुद्धाहरुमा तीब्रताका साथ काम गर्नुुपर्नेमा जोड दिनुभयो ।

प्रतिनिधिमण्डलले त्यसपछी माननीय परराष्ट्रमन्त्री श्री नारायण खड्का र सम्माननीय राष्ट्रिय सभा अध्यक्ष श्री गणेश प्रसाद तिमिल्सिनासँग शिष्टाचार भेट गरेको थियो ।
राष्ट्रिय सभाका सम्माननीय अध्यक्ष तिमिल्सिनाले महानिर्देशक र क्षेत्रीय निर्देशकलाई अभिनन्दन गर्दै, विश्व स्वास्थ्य संगठनबाट नेपाललाई प्राप्त निरन्तर सहयोग तथा कोभिड–१९ महामारीको समयमा सांसदहरुसँग श्रृङ्खलाबद्ध अन्तरक्रियाहरु संचालन गर्न गरेको फलदायी सहयोगका लागि कृतज्ञता व्यक्त गर्नुभयो ।
कोभिड–१९ महामारी प्रतिकार्यमा नेपालले अपनाएको समग्र समाजको अवधारणा र स्वास्थ्यलाई संविधानमा आधारभूत मानव अधिकारको रुपमा मान्यता दिएकोमा महानिर्देशकले नेपालको प्रशंसा गर्नुभयो ।
महानिर्देशक नेतृत्वको विश्व स्वास्थ्य संगठनको प्रतिनिधिमण्डलले भोली वैशाख ९ गते सम्माननीय राष्ट्रपति श्रीमती विद्यादेवी भण्डारी र सम्माननीय प्रधानमन्त्री श्री शेर बहादुर देउवासँग शिष्टाचार भेट गर्ने कार्यक्रम रहेको छ । प्रतिनिधिमण्डलले त्यसपछि एक स्थानिय विद्यालयमा गई जारी टाइफाइड कन्जुगेट खोप अभियानको अवलोकन गर्नुका साथै स्वास्थ्यसंस्थाहरुको भ्रमण गर्नेछ ।
माननीय स्वास्थ्य मन्त्री श्री विरोध खतिवडाको निमन्त्रणामा विश्व स्वास्थ्य संगठनका महानिर्देशक नेपाल आउनुभएको हो ।
