Kathmandu, Bagmati province - The Ministry of Health and Population (MoHP) and WHO Nepal organized a workshop on 17 April to present findings from a recent hospital safety assessment conducted using Nepal’s Customized Hospital Safety Index (HSI) tool. The assessment, which focused on structural and non-structural safety, fire safety, accessibility and emergency preparedness, was carried out in seven hub hospitals – one from each province – between December 2024 and January 2025. The workshop brought together over 50 participants, including representatives from the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority, the Ministry of Federal Affairs and General Administration, the Ministry of Urban Development, the Department of Urban Development and Building Construction, partners and officials from all seven hub hospitals. The assessment findings revealed gaps and emphasized the urgent need for targeted interventions to strengthen hospital resilience and ensure the continuity of essential health-care services during both routine operations and emergencies. The assessors proposed practical, actionable measures to address the identified vulnerabilities, highlighting the importance of timely implementation – particularly of low-hanging opportunities that can significantly enhance hospital safety with minimal investment. This initiative is supported by UNITAID and the Coalition for Disaster Resilient Infrastructure.
