Kathmandu, Bagmati province - The Ministry of Health and Population (MoHP) and the WHO Country Office for Nepal observed World Drowning Prevention Day in the presence of dignitaries from the MoHP, UN agencies, civil society organizations and the media. Under the theme "Anyone can drown, no one should," the day, observed by MoHP for the first time on a federal level, raised awareness about drowning prevention, a critical yet often overlooked public health issue. Informative presentations by the MoHP, WHO, and partners, along with heartfelt testimonials and informative discussions from participants including healthcare workers, mayors, and police, emphasized the stark realities and risks associated with drowning and the urgent need for preventive measures to save lives. Stakeholders highlighted the importance of implementing effective policies and safety standards for water bodies, bringing this crucial topic into the media spotlight and mobilizing efforts towards a safer and more informed community. The event also fostered collaboration among partners to share best practices and enhance collective efforts to prevent drowning. WHO will continue to increase awareness on drowning prevention.
