Governance: Development of feasible global targets for 2030 on integrated people-centred eye care

Assignment given to the WHO Secretariat by the World Health Assembly 

Paragraph 4 of resolution WHA73.4 requested the WHO Director-General “to prepare, in consultation with Member States, recommendations on feasible global targets for 2030 on integrated people-centred eye care, focusing on effective coverage of refractive error and effective coverage of cataract surgery, for consideration by the Seventy-fourth World Health Assembly in 2021, through the 148th session of the Executive Board”.

In response to decision WHA73.4, the process which the WHO Secretariat will follow to develop the feasible global targets for 2030 on integrated people-centred eye care, focusing on effective coverage of refractive error and effective coverage of cataract surgery, is as follows:

  • ­13 October 2020: The Secretariat will publish a discussion paper with preliminary recommendations on feasible global targets for 2030 on integrated people-centred eye care, focusing on effective coverage of refractive error and effective coverage of cataract surgery.
  • ­13 October – 3 November 2020: Web-based consultation on the discussion paper dated 13 October 2020. The web-based consultation will be open to Member States, UN organizations and other international organizations, and non-State actors. All relevant feedback received will be published on WHO’s website.
  • ­4 November 2020 from 9:00 to 12:00: Informal consultation for Member States (virtual) on the discussion paper dated 13 October 2020, and the feedback received through the web-based consultation.
  • ­18-26 January 2021: The 148th session of the Executive Board will be invited to consider the draft global targets for 2030 proposed by the Secretariat, and/or provide further guidance.
