Climate crisis is a health crisis. The same human activities that are destabilizing the Earth’s climate also contribute directly to poor health. A lack of progress in reducing emissions and building adaptive capacity threatens both human lives, the human right to health and the viability of national health systems. Ensuring a widespread understanding of climate change as a central public health issue is critical in delivering an accelerated response.
This event will highlight the crucial interconnection between health, justice and climate change, as well as the health cobenefits of climate action. It will showcase the progress made by the Member States, the UN and the health community in building climate resilient and sustainable low carbon health systems via platforms such as the WHO-led Alliance for Transformative Action for Climate and Health (ATACH).
This event will also provide an opportunity to advance the commitments made during recent COPs, as well as to release the COP30 Belém Health Action Plan and two supporting documents, jointly developed in collaboration with the global health community, calling for raising ambition, accelerating concrete action and mobilizing finance for health. It will highlight the solutions in promoting and accelerating mitigation, adaptation and climate actions for health systems resilience and a just transition.
This event is co-organized by World Health Organization (WHO) and United Nations University (UNU) in collaboration with other UN partners.
