Infant feeding : the physiological basis / edited by James Akré
Bulletin of the World Health Organization ; v. 67. Supplement
Overview
This publication establishes the scientific basis for addressing the many questions relating to the appropriate feeding of children during the first year of life. Noting that an adequate diet is more decisive during infancy than at any other time of life, the study considers that the knowledge acquired in terms of infant physiology can contribute to a better understanding of nutritional needs. You will also find more than 500 references. In addition to confirming the unique benefits of breastmilk as the only truly universal source of infant nutrition, the evidence reviewed challenges some commonly held assumptions, such as the circumstances under which commercially available infant formula is required, the best time to introduce complementary feeding and the most suitable diet for low birth weight infants. The book is divided into six main chapters.
