Global Platform for Access to Childhood Cancer Medicines
Overview
- Reliable access to quality assured medicines is a pre-requisite for improved treatment outcome for childhood cancer. However, the cost, relatively smaller market size, lack of prioritization and multiple other factors contribute to difficulty in access to the much-needed medicines.
- WHO and its partner in the Global Initiative for Childhood Cancer - St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, have initiated a novel initiative to address this by establishing the Global Platform for Access to Childhood Cancer Medicines (GPACCM). The initiative aims to have participation of 50 low- and middle-income countries in phase-wise manner.
- From the WHO South-East Asia Region, Nepal has participated in the first cohort and Sri Lanka is in process for participation in the second cohort.
- With support from the platform, Nepal has declared free treatment for children with cancer through the government facilities.
