Improving food control system
Overview
A food control assessment tool developed jointly FAO and WHO, to propose a harmonized, objective and consensual basis to analyse the performance of a national food control system. Indonesia was the first country in Asia for pilot testing of assessment of National Food Control System under FAO/WHO collaborative activity. Since the pilot project required huge financial and technical support over a period of one year, FAO and WHO country offices coordinated with HQ and regional offices of both agencies for technical expertise and financial input on resource and cost-sharing basis. This activity has brought together 11 Ministries and Institutions including Academia. Local and international consultants were mobilized to conduct situation analysis and to facilitate interactive, participatory assessment process with involvement of national stakeholders. The assessment identified key priority actions in developing a multi-year strategic plan for implementation with commitment from key stakeholders. The plan helped to mobilize domestic funding and improved intersectoral coordination. As a follow up of recommendations, a risk profiling and categorization training has been organized with a FAO supported consultant and within a WHO supported national activity in 2018-2019. It was a cost-effective, resource efficient and country focused multi-stakeholders activity supported jointly by FAO and WHO.
