Overview

rota_intro_searRotaviruses infect nearly every child by the age of 3-5 years and are the leading cause, globally, of severe, dehydrating diarrhoea in children. WHO recommends that rotavirus vaccine should be included in all national immunization programmes, particularly in countries with high rotavirus gastroenteritis (RVGE)-associated fatality rates. The use of rotavirus vaccine should be part of a comprehensive strategy to control diarrhoeal disease.

Rotavirus vaccine has been introduced in parts of India and Thailand. Bangladesh and Nepal have plans for introduction in 2018.
