Overview
Treatment for hepatitis B differs for chronic and acute infections. Supportive therapy and monitoring of liver function are the recommended treatments for acute hepatitis B, while antivirals can be used to treat chronic hepatitis B. Antiviral treatment for hepatitis B is more complex when individuals are co-infected with either hepatitis C virus or HIV.
Most people, especially those living in low- and middle-income countries, do not have access to treatment because of the lack of diagnostic and clinical services, and the high prices of some of the hepatitis medicines.
