The 20th anniversary of World Blood Donor Day is an excellent and timely opportunity to thank blood donors across the world for their life-saving donations over the years and honour the profound impact on both patients and donors. Blood transfusion stands as an integral component of modern healthcare. Inadequate or unsafe blood supply profoundly impacts the efficacy of essential health services in delivering appropriate patient care.
World Blood Donor Day was officially established in 2004. The date chosen was June 14, which marks the birthday of Karl Landsteiner, the Nobel Prize winner who discovered the ABO blood group system. His discovery was critical for the development of safe blood transfusion practices.
World Blood Donor Day (WBDD) was established to raise awareness about the need for safe blood and blood products and to thank voluntary, unpaid blood donors for their life-saving gifts of blood.
World Blood Donor Day has played a pivotal role in fostering a culture of voluntary blood donation, ensuring that blood supplies are safe and sufficient to meet the needs of patients everywhere.
