Agentic Workflows and Human Oversight

Webinar

We are pleased to invite you to the sixth session of the WHO-SEARO Webinar Series on Responsible AI in Healthcare, organized in collaboration with the Koita Centre for Digital Health, Ashoka University.

The upcoming session, titled “Agentic Workflows and Human Oversight,” will examine a rapidly emerging frontier in healthcare AI: the growing shift from assistive AI systems toward increasingly autonomous and agentic workflows. As AI systems begin to coordinate tasks, retrieve information, reason across complex inputs, and support operational or clinical decision-making with greater independence, important questions arise around accountability, escalation pathways, reliability, and the evolving role of human oversight.

The discussion will explore what meaningful oversight looks like when AI systems are no longer functioning simply as passive tools, but as active participants within healthcare workflows. Particular attention will be given to how healthcare institutions can maintain transparency, human judgment, and operational safety while integrating increasingly capable AI systems into real-world settings.

Rather than approaching oversight as a narrow compliance exercise, the session will examine how governance, workflow design, monitoring mechanisms, and institutional safeguards must evolve alongside advances in AI autonomy. The conversation will also reflect on the realities of deploying such systems across diverse and resource-constrained healthcare environments in the South-East Asia region, where infrastructural variability, workforce pressures, and contextual differences significantly shape implementation.

Objectives

  • Examine the growing role of agentic AI systems and autonomous workflows within healthcare environments.
  • Explore how human oversight, accountability, and escalation mechanisms need to evolve as AI systems become more operationally embedded.
  • Discuss practical governance, safety, and workflow considerations for deploying increasingly autonomous AI systems responsibly in healthcare.

Expected Outcomes

By the end of the session, participants will be able to:

  • Develop a clearer understanding of the opportunities and risks associated with agentic AI workflows in healthcare.
  • Identify key technical, operational, and governance considerations for maintaining meaningful human oversight.
  • Recognize the importance of contextual adaptation, continuous monitoring, and institutional safeguards in the responsible deployment of increasingly autonomous AI systems.
