In 2023, the Emergency Medical Team 2030 strategy was launched globally. Its emphasis is on building strong national health systems and the need for more coordinated collective action.

There has been strong interest and commitment from Member States of the South-East Asia Region in strengthening their National capacity for local health response to disasters, outbreaks and other health emergencies that required deployment of teams of trained health personnel.

This commitment was further strengthened through the Regional Committee resolution on “Strengthening Emergency Medical Teams (EMTs) in South-East Asia Region” (SEA/RC71/R5) in September 2018. With this, the regional EMT working group was formed which guides the countries in strengthening the national EMT capacities. The current working group is co-chaired by India and Thailand. The WHO EMT initiative has provided global guidance entailing international standards for building accredited teams.

Thailand EMT is first classified EMT in SEAR. Currently there are four other EMTs from Region (two from Indonesia, one from Sri Lanka and Thailand upgraded classification) are undergoing mentorship and classification process.

An EMT multi-country training center has been established in Indonesia. It is hosted by Republic of Indonesia Defence  University (RIDU) following the Memorandum of understanding signed by Government of Indonesia and WHO at G20 summit in November 2022.

Moving forward, with support from Regional EMT working Group, WHO Regional Office has embarked on developing a 2030 strategy rollout plan and support its implementation to achieve the targets indicated in the global strategy.
