Readiness and Response planning
Ensuring operational readiness for potential and or impending crises is an important function led by EMO unit of WHE. In tandem with providing ongoing support for emergency response, the Unit focusses on key readiness components aligning with global WHO guidance on emergency readiness and collaborates with other Units of WHO Health Emergencies Programme. The efforts are directed towards bolstering capacities throughout the Region, with a commitment to elevating the overall state of emergency readiness.
Readiness
Health facilities, especially hospitals, are critical assets for communities both routinely and in times of emergencies, disasters, and other crises. However, hospitals and medical staff are frequently among the victims of emergencies, making it challenging to deliver prompt medical care. The ability of the hospital to continue operating after an emergency/disaster depends on factors such as the safety of the facility premise, the operation of vital systems and equipment, the accessibility of immediate supplies, and the hospital's emergency management capabilities. It is important to note the fact that high patient concentration and exposure to flammable materials, in health facilities have increased the risk of fire hazards, thus endangering the medical and non-medical staff along with patients. Therefore, it is vital that hospital safety planning and management encompass fire safety.
