Climate resilience and sanitation
WHO is a member of the Climate Resilient Sanitation Coalition. Poorly managed sanitation systems impacted by climate hazards create major health and contamination risks, and also contribute significant greenhouse gas emissions. And yet sanitation can be a climate solution, with adaptation and mitigation benefits for communities, ecosystems and living environments.
A Call to Action launched at COP27 led to the Climate Resilient Sanitation Coalition that integrates sanitation into climate policy and practice, and climate adaptation and mitigation into sanitation policy and practice. The coalition works collectively on improved prioritization, capacity and investment in climate resilient sanitation. The coalition recently supported the Green Climate Fund prepare the Annex III Practical guidelines for designing climate resilient sanitation projects.
Key WHO resources on climate and sanitation are the Discussion Paper, Sanitation and Health Guidelines and Climate Resilient Sanitation Safety Planning manual updated in 2022.
