Combatting Ageism

Combatting Ageism

Ageism affects how we think, feel and act towards others and ourselves based on age. It imposes powerful barriers to the development of good policies and programmes for older and younger people, and has profound negative consequences on older adults’ health and well-being. WHO is working together with key partners on a Global Campaign to Combat Ageism—an initiative supported by WHO's 194 Member States. The Campaign aims to change the narrative around age and ageing and help create a world for all ages.

Our work on the Campaign

Generating an evidence base

WHO is building an evidence base on ageism to better understand what ageism is, why it matters, and how we can address it. WHO is also working to develop strategies to measure and reduce ageism.

Building a global coalition

It is only through concerted and coordinated action that we can create a world for all ages. WHO is building a global coalition to improve data collection, enable sharing of knowledge, and coordinate efforts to prevent and respond to ageism.

Raising awareness

To transform understandings of age and ageing, WHO delivers awareness raising events and capacity building programmes, and develops tools to enable others to spread the word about ageism.
