Empowering Lives Through Rehabilitation

Sirindhorn National Medical Rehabilitation Institute (SNMRI): A Beacon of Hope in Thailand’s Health System

1 October 2025
Reading time:

In the heart of Thailand’s public health landscape, the Sirindhorn National Medical Rehabilitation Institute (SNMRI) stands as a transformative force—empowering individuals with disabilities to reclaim independence, dignity, and purpose.

Rehabilitation is more than a medical service; it is a pathway to inclusion. As part of Universal Health Coverage (UHC), rehabilitation complements health promotion, disease prevention, treatment, and palliative care. It enables people—children, adults, and older persons—to live life to the fullest, participate in education and employment, and engage in meaningful social roles, including caregiving.

Recognizing this, the World Health Organization (WHO) has long supported rehabilitation as a pillar of strong health systems. SNMRI, once designated as a WHO Collaborating Centre for Training in Medical Rehabilitation and Prosthetics–Orthotics, continues to lead Thailand’s efforts in this field. Today, it serves not only as a national center of excellence but also as a regional knowledge hub, sharing real-world innovations and contributing to the development of a regional rehabilitation roadmap.

A Mission Rooted in Equity and Innovation

Under the Department of Medical Services, Ministry of Public Health, SNMRI operates as a unique blend of academic, capacity-building, and clinical expertise. Its mission is clear: to improve the quality of life for people with disabilities through:

  • Community-based rehabilitation
  • Improved access to assistive technologies and aids
  • Training of nurses and rehabilitation professionals
  • Research and development of customized assistive technologies under UHC, reducing financial burdens for patients

Transforming Lives: Stories of Impact

SNMRI’s work is best understood through the lives it touches.

  • 3D-Printed Prosthetics and Orthotics In addition to other conventional materials, SNMRI’s prosthetics and orthotics unit utilizes 3D printing technology to fabricate customized, biomechanically optimized devices. These prosthetics and orthotics are tailored to each individual’s anatomy and functional needs, offering improved comfort, precision, and affordability. This innovation is especially impactful for children and adults requiring rapid adjustments or replacements.
  • Occupational Therapy Intensive Clinic: this clinic supports patients with Acquired Brain Injury (ABI) during the critical “golden period” of recovery. Using cutting-edge methods like Constraint-Induced Movement Therapy (CIMT), Mirror Therapy, and robotic-assisted rehabilitation, the clinic helps patients regain function and reintegrate into daily life.
  • Wheelchair Skills Training Program: For individuals with spinal cord injuries, SNMRI’s targeted training program has significantly improved mobility and independence. Participants report greater confidence and ability to navigate their environments safely and efficiently.
