The Healthy Islands story
‘Healthy Islands’ is an ideal envisioned in 1995 at the first Pacific Health Ministers Meeting on Yanuca Island, Fiji.
In 2015, the vision was reaffirmed and a fifth and final line was added. Accordingly, the Healthy Islands vision is one where:
Children are nurtured in body and mind;
Environments invite learning and leisure;
People work and age with dignity;
Ecological balance is a source of pride; and,
The ocean which sustains us is protected.
Over the past three decades, this vision has formed the foundation for the Pacific Health Ministers Meetings, held every two years, and has served as a unifying theme for health protection and promotion in the Pacific. The vision reflects the comprehensive and integrated approach to health that is a hallmark of WHO’s work with Member States and partners in the Pacific.
With 2025 marking the 30th anniversary of the adoption of the Healthy Islands vision, a special event will be held on the 25th of October 2025 for Pacific island countries and areas to review progress, celebrate success, consider new and emerging challenges to shape a renewed approach that is future-focused and aligned with the 2050 Strategy for the Blue Pacific Continent, endorsed by Pacific Islands Forum Leaders in 2022. Grounded in regional solidarity, innovation, and cultural identity, the vision will continue to inspire collective action towards a healthier, more resilient Pacific.
