The World Health Organization has offered technical support to the Ministry of Health following widespread flooding in western Fiji.
The offer of assistance includes working with the Government in identifying major health risks and sector priorities, development of an immediate response strategy and strengthening of surveillance and disease early warning systems. WHO also assists in developing key food safety messages for consumers and enhanced surveillance for leptospirosis and typhoid fever.
WHO has activated its Event Management Group to coordinate the response to the flooding. The Event Management Group, representing the WHO Office in Fiji and the Regional Office for the Western Pacific based in Manila, has been closely monitoring the evolving situation.
“The World Health Organization extends its sympathies to the people and Government of Fiji and stands ready to provide any necessary support to the affected people and communities,” said Dr Dong Il Ahn, WHO Representative/Director Pacific Technical Support.
The Government of Fiji declared a state of natural disaster for most of the country’s western division after widespread flooding killed seven and affected 150 000 people. To date, 12 000 people are seeking shelter in 117 evacuation centres.
