World Hearing Day

3 March 2024

World Hearing Day is commemorated every 3 March. Among all WHO global regions, the Western Pacific Region is estimated to have the highest prevalence of hearing loss, with an estimated 7% of the population living with hearing loss.

By 2050, approximately 760 million people in the Region are projected to have some degree of hearing loss. The Region also faces significant challenges with a high level of otitis media and disability associated with hearing loss. However, countries in the Region are taking measures to improve ear and hearing care, and helping people living with hearing loss to be as independent as possible in everyday activities.

On this World Hearing Day 2024, WHO is calling for a change in mindsets, focusing on overcoming challenges posed by societal misperceptions and stigmatizing attitudes through awareness-raising and information-sharing efforts targeting both the public and healthcare providers. This year's objectives also include providing accurate evidence-based information on ear and hearing problems and engaging countries and civil society to address misperceptions and stigmatizing attitudes related to hearing loss, ensuring equitable access to ear and hearing care.
