Liu Tao, Hong Kong SAR (China)
People of the Western Pacific
“I contracted SARS in 2003. I was 58 years old at the time, and very sick. There were one or two months that I couldn’t sit up. I couldn’t even lift my head.
It was then I really understood what it was like to be a patient.
My goals became quite basic- all I wanted was to be a good doctor.
In my practice, it is about seeing, listening and asking. As a doctor, these techniques help me understand the patient’s symptoms. Every individual has their own idiosyncrasies and each life has its uniqueness.
To support them, management of diet and nutrition is one of the key features of the traditional Chinese approach to medicine. It is also a common cultural practice among many of the patients here.
I’ll be retiring this month. In a way, I have seen it all. I have seen joys and sorrows. But I have worked hard, and I will continue to do so.”
