WHO global report on trends in prevalence of tobacco use 2000-2025: Key messages in the Western Pacific

Overview

Tobacco smoking in the Western Pacific Region is declining, thanks to tobacco control policies and efforts implemented in countries, but the projected decline is not sufficient to meet the 30% reduction goal by 2025. In fact, reductions in tobacco use in this region are the slowest of all WHO regions (7.5% relative reduction).

By 2025, the Western Pacific Region is projected to have 6 million more tobacco users than there were in 2015 due to population growth and aggressive tobacco industry marketing. Urgent action through accelerated implementation of proven measures, such as MPOWER, is needed to reduce tobacco use in the Western Pacific Region.
