Kathmandu, Bagmati province - Under the theme "Unmasking the Appeal", the Ministry of Health and Population, WHO Country Office for Nepal and partners marked World No Tobacco Day by spotlighting the manipulative tactics used by tobacco industries. These industries employ deceptive strategies – including attractive flavours, sleek product designs and glamourized marketing – to lure young people and retain users. Presentations at the event highlighted the dangers of tobacco products, especially e-cigarettes or vapes, and outlined Nepal’s legal and policy measures to curb tobacco use. The national hotline number 1132 was also inaugurated to support individuals trying to quit tobacco, offering counselling and guidance to individuals who wish to quit tobacco products. Six individuals were honoured for their exemplary contributions to tobacco control, and winners of a video competition organized by National Health Education Information and Communication Center, which reflected the theme, were also awarded. Stakeholders emphasized the importance of empowering youth to make informed, healthy choices and called for collective action to reduce tobacco use and vaping, and to advance the vision of a healthier, tobacco-free Nepal.
