Priority setting for research on NTDs

The diverse nature of NTDs and approaches to tackle their burden is reflected in the diverse nature of products and tools needed to implement the 2021–2030 NTDs road map. A formal process to set research and development priorities will be undertaken in 2021, culminating in the production of a research and development blueprint for NTDs. This will be published as a companion document to the 2021–2030 NTDs road map.

Diagnostics are a specific element of NTD research and development for which renewed efforts have already commenced. Accurate, reliable and affordable diagnostics are recognized as critical to direct, monitor and evaluate progress towards the attainment of 2021–2030 NTDs road map targets. WHO’s Department of Control of NTDs has therefore established a Diagnostic Technical Advisory Group (DTAG) and various subgroups to provide assistance in identifying and prioritizing diagnostic gaps. The DTAG has begun to develop target product profiles to encourage and guide research and investment on new diagnostic tools for NTDs.
