SweetC, doctor

SweetC, a doctor working with WHO, goes out with health workers to help them with strategies so that no child under five years old misses out on polio drops. Here’s a snippet of what her day is like in the field.

“I went with vaccinators from Palomar Health Center and they told me that we had to go to the informal settlers living along the waterways of Tondo. It was very difficult to traverse that area because the walkway was very narrow and with one wrong step you would fall into the estero (small river).

We saw a lot of kids there… but then the kids were on the opposite side of the estero. There was a bamboo bridge, a tiny bamboo bridge. It has a handle, but it was thin. The health staff told me that 'Okay Doc, we have to cross that bamboo bridge.' I said, 'Oh I’m not sure, I’m scared, I might fall down into that estero!'

But then before we crossed that bridge, a dog blocked the way. The dog started looking at us. Luckily, the owner was able to hold on to the dog. We crossed that bamboo bridge and managed to reach the other side. There we vaccinated three kids who were below five years old.

Yes, it was a success not to fall into the estero and to vaccinate the kids!

What motivates me to do my job every day is that I think Filipino children deserve to enjoy their childhood where they can play and go to school, free from all these diseases that could be prevented by vaccination. To every family that has a child below five years old, please have them vaccinated against polio!”
