The Pandemic Fund was established in 2022 as a global financial mechanism to strengthen international cooperation and resource mobilization to prevent, prepare for, and respond to pandemics. The Fund aims to support low- and middle-income countries in building resilient health systems and enhancing their capacities to effectively address health emergencies, aligning with frameworks such as the International Health Regulations (IHR, 2005) and adopting the principles of equity and inclusivity.
In its first call for proposals, the Fund allocated US$ 338 million to 19 projects, including two from the Western Pacific – Cambodia and Mongolia. As the Fund seeks to raise an additional US$ 2 billion over the next two years, and reset its Governing Board in May 2025, it is an opportune moment for countries in the Western Pacific to engage in the governance and decision-making processes of the Fund. This engagement will ensure that real-world needs and priorities are addressed, making the Region better prepared for future health emergencies.
The WHO Regional Office for the Western Pacific and the Pandemic Fund are co-hosting a side event to enhance understanding and engagement with the Fund and to highlight its role in building resilient health systems. The event will provide a platform for dialogue among countries and areas on how the Western Pacific can leverage the Pandemic Fund to bolster health security and preparedness capacities. The event is especially timely as the Region navigates the challenges posed by disease outbreaks and disasters and is seeking to strengthen its health infrastructure to better respond to future emergencies and pandemics.
