2019年12月31日，世界卫生组织（世卫组织）获悉，在中国湖北省武汉市发现一组不明原因的肺炎病例。中国当局于2020年1月7 日将SARS-CoV-2确定为该病的致病病毒，世卫组织于2020年2月11日将这一疾病命名为2019冠状病毒病(COVID-19)。作为疫情应对的一部分，世卫组织启动了一项研发蓝图，以加快这种新型冠状病毒的诊断制剂、疫苗和治疗方法的开发。
在世卫组织的协调下，一个具有不同背景的专家组正在努力开发COVID-19疫苗。
该专家组呼吁所有人遵循用来防止COVID-19病毒传播以及保护个人健康的建议。同时感谢每个人对科学界的信任。
