- The Epidemiology and Disease Control Division (EDCD) and WHO Country Office for Nepal, observed World Malaria Day with the theme: “Malaria ends with us: reinvest, reimagine and reignite.” This year’s theme carries special meaning for Nepal, which is in the final stretch toward malaria elimination. Officials from the EDCD, WHO, national experts and partners highlighted Nepal’s major progress – a 96 per cent drop in malaria cases from 2014 to 2024, and fewer than 50 indigenous cases reported each year for the past four years. Officials also discussed national updates, strategies to reduce imported cases and community-led monitoring initiatives. They also identified gaps and offered practical solutions to strengthen the malaria surveillance response. WHO reaffirmed its commitment to continuing technical support and working closely with Ministry of Health and Population (MoHP) and partners to achieve malaria elimination in Nepal.
